Charity Am-Am
Sunday 26th June 2022
The morning charity weekend Am-Am, on Sunday 26th June 2022, attracted a very small field with only seven teams participating. The conditions were extremely blustery, although it was warm and it kept fine and dry. The winners with 86 points, being very consistent and scoring 43 points on each half of the course, were Jamie Kinnaird, Daniel Wood, Tommy Leonard and Dave Saville. Due to the small field only one prize has been allocated with the winners all receiving a £15 voucher. Second place went to Lee Fenty, Mark Fenty, Jon Patterson and Owen Peart, who finished two points further back with 83 points. There were just a couple of twos, both on the second hole, from Jonathan Patterson and Jamie Kinnaird and they share a pot of £29. Due to the limited entries only one prize for first place has been allocated.

The best round of the day was recorded in division four, by Gavin Harris, who wins a £30 voucher with 43 points. Second place with 39 points went to Steve Baker and he wins a £20 voucher. Midweek Medal
Thursday 16th June
It was a glorious day at Grimsby Golf Club for the midweek medal, a stroke play competition made up of 4 divisions, depending on the player’s handicap. Highs of 26 degrees Celsius, with a slight wind throughout the day. Good conditions for golf. Perhaps surprisingly then, only 3 of the 60 competitors shot under par.
In Division 1, Jason Marshall returned a score of nett 68, playing off his handicap of 11. A £20 voucher was awarded. Steve Parker was in second with a nett 71, also playing off 11, winning a voucher for £10.
Stephen Bloomer rounded off the top 3 with a nett 72, beating Oliver Ryan on countback. Stephen receives a voucher for £7.
Division 2 was won by Robert Daughney with a nett score of 68. He wins a £20 voucher. John Mawer beat Garry Hawkins on countback to secure 2nd spot, both shooting a nett 71. £10 and £7 vouchers were issued respectively.
Division 3 saw no under par scores, however it was fiercely contested with just one shot separating the top 4. Lee Partington came out on top with a nett 71, winning a £20 voucher. The 3 players to shoot a nett 72 were, in countback order, Tim Flowers, Vincent McAfee and Owen Peart. Tim wins a £10 voucher and Vincent wins a £7 voucher. Owen narrowly misses out on the prizes.
And finally in Division 4, the lowest nett score of the day was achieved by Andrew Petcher returning a 67, and winning a £20 voucher. Darren Braithwaite and Nick Southern both shot a nett 72 with Darren coming second on countback. £10 and £7 vouchers were earned respectively. Only two 2’s were recorded, both on the second hole. Oliver Ryan and Owen Peart managed them, which will ease their disappointment of coming 4th on countback in their divisions. They each win a voucher for £30.

Binbrook Trophy
Saturday 11th June 2022
It kept fine and dry for the Betterball Pairs Stableford Binbrook Trophy played on Saturday 11th June 2022. The most dominating feature was the very blustery south westerly breeze which was quite fierce at times. Playing off 85% of their individual course handicap, some members found the competition quite difficult, although there were some excellent scores returned from those members who managed to overcome the conditions. Tom Willson and Steve McIntyre returned an excellent score card of 46 points to take the honour, which was two points clear of their nearest rivals. They both win a £40 voucher. After a count back Darren Cook and Tommy Leonard, winning a voucher to the value of £30, took second place with a better back six with 44 points, relegating Jimmy Cribb and Doug McCully into third place, who both win a £25 voucher. Dave Herring and Keith Tuke both win a £20 voucher for taking fourth place, with 42 points, after a count back relegating Garry Hawkins and Gary Tuck into fifth place, who both win a £15 voucher. There were 4 twos returned, each valued at £28, from Nick Cutsforth and Mike Foley on the second hole, Darren Cook on the sixth hole and from Dave Herring on the 13th.
Ron Thomas - 2nd Round
Saturday 4th June 2022
After the two rounds were combined the overall winner, with a nett 134 was Adam Fox. He finished one shot ahead of Jon Tyson, who returned two under par rounds to finish with a nett 135. Two shots further back in third place with an overall total of 137 was Dave Sharpe.
The best overall gross score was returned by Tim Seaton with a total of 149.
Vouchers have been allocated to all the above recipients in accordance with the Brs message forwarded to all the members.
Ron Thomas Trophy - first round
Saturday 28th May 2022
The best gross score was recorded by Tim Seaton returning a score of 73. Dave Ferguson also had a good round, with the next best gross, returning a score of 76.
There were seven twos recorded all sharing a pot of £107 which equates to £15.25 each. Ashley Rendall and Gary Paterson were successful on the 2nd hole. Shaun Wood and Dave Ferguson on the 6th hole, Ian Braithwaite and Owen Peart on the long par 3, 9th hole, and the last one from veteran John (Ian) Ritchie on the 13th.
Ladies Charity Pink Am Am Competition
Tuesday 24th May 2022
A lot of hard work went on before and during the event, with guests from various other golf clubs also taking part. All the ladies were encouraged to wear pink for the day and even the pins on each hole contained pink flags.
The winners of the competition were Annette Paddison & Jane Patterson from Grimsby Golf Club, who were accompanied by Josie Hallam and Sheila Greenhalgh from Laceby Golf Club with 87 points. They won by the slightest of margins with the runners up Kris Mysko and Margaret Ratherham from Cottingham accompanied by Helen Pickles and Nancy Tatham from Lincoln Golf Club finishing one point further back with 86 points. Third place with 84 points, went to Trudy Owen and Elaine Baker from Cleethorpes, who were accompanied by Pam Hayward and Johanna Dawson from Kenwick Park.
The nearest the pin competition was won by Sue Beckwith from Wheatley Golf Club, Doncaster, whilst the Ladies Captain, Isobel Goulsbra finished nearest the wobbly line on the ninth hole.
A total of 80 ladies took part in the event and they were all joined later by a number of non-golfing ladies for tea and cake in the clubhouse.
They were all very fortunate, that the weather stayed fine and dry for them, with the sun shining, which was a bonus, for the super effort made by all concerned.
Very well done indeed.

May Stableford
Saturday 21st May 2022
Split into four separate divisions, and the winner of each qualifies for the Trophy Winners Final, to be played later in the year, taking the honour in division one, with the joint best score of the day, with 41 points, was Marc Bradley. He finished 4 points clear of his nearest rivals, and the count back procedure had to be implemented to resolve the minor places when Graham Thompson and Spenny Wressell returned scores of 37 points. With an excellent back nine of 21 points Graham took second place, relegating Spenny into third spot. John Watson finished fourth in the division with a par round of 36.
In division two there was another 4 points victory for John Mawer who returned a score of 39 points. Once again, the count back procedure had to be implemented to resolve the minor placings, when Reece Okopskyi, with a back nine of 19 points took second, edging out Jack Hodgson, who scored 17 points on the back nine, after they both returned scores of 35.
Vinny McAfee won the third division, returning a score of 39 points, three points ahead of his nearest rivals, Ivan Bennett and Jim Hughes, who both returned par rounds of 36. With a back nine of 21 points Ivan took second place, relegating Jim to third.
Another excellent score, the joint best round of the day, took the honour in division four, when Keith Blenkhorn, returned a score of 41 points. He finished well clear of Colin Hodgson who returned a par round of 36 points to take second place. In third place, after the countback procedure once again, was Tony Shepherd with 30 points, having 19 points on the back nine and edging out of the prizes Gavin Harris, who returned the same score, but only had 13 points on the back nine.
Prize vouchers have been issued to the first three participants in each division with the winner receiving a £30 voucher, the runners up £25, and third place awarded a £20 voucher each.
There were only five twos recorded from the 120 entries, each valued at £24. John Watson and Marc Bradley were successful on the second hole, Ivan Bennett on the sixth, Jason Marshall on the ninth hole and Dave Proudlove on the thirteenth.

Annette Paddison and Tony Shepherd put in an excellent challenge to finish in second place when their final shot ended up just short of the hole. Sue Collis and Tim Seaton finished in third place with their ball being off the green. It was an excellent social gathering, enjoyed by all, with all the competitors enjoying a lovely meal in the clubhouse afterwards.
Chairman's Cup
Saturday 30th April 2022
It remained fine and dry once again, and even the cold north easterly wind had abated, for the Chairmans Cup played by over 110 members, on Saturday 30th April 2022. With a playing handicap of 24, the winner with an exceptional score of nett 63, and taking home a £100 voucher was Owen Peart. He finished two shots clear of Tommy Playford who also had an excellent round, playing off 14, when he shot a nett 65, and he wins a £70 voucher.
The minor places had to be decided by the count back procedure with three members shooting under par rounds of nett 68. Steve Jones playing off 19, with 33, on the back nine took third place and wins a £40 voucher. Andy Gillett, playing of 23, took fourth spot with a back nine of 34 and wins a £20 voucher. In fifth place, with a back nine of 35, playing off a handicap of 10 was Nick Cutsforth and he wins a £10 voucher. In the excellent golfing conditions only five other members shot under par. Peter Mitchell got his two on the long par 3, ninth hole and there were two on the 13th hole from Ian Lord and Oliver Hamilton. St Georges Am-Am
Saturday 23rd April 2021
The St. George’s Day stableford Am-Am (getting harder) attracted over 100 competitors on Saturday 23rd April 2022, and after a grey and dull start to the proceedings, by late morning the sun made an appearance and it kept fine and dry for the rest of the day, but the easterly strong breeze kept the temperatures down. The format for the competition was quite demanding. Playing off 85% of their individual course playing handicap, it was the best two scores to count on the first six holes, then the best three scores to count on the next six, with all four team members to score on the last six holes.
Five teams managed to crack the 100 points barrier with the winning team consisting of Mike Foley. Shane Portess, Trevor Chappell and Ian Smith amassing 113 points. They all win a £30 voucher. They finished five points ahead of the second-place team, consisting of Vince Pederen, Mark Finney, Glen McLachlan and Alan Drewery who returned a score of 108 points. They all win a £20 voucher. With 102 points and finishing in third spot and each winning a £10 voucher, were Ricki Benefer, Shane Holt, Allan and Tommy Playford.
Keith Brown, Jeff Thorndike, Martin Mumby and John Grest finished with 101 points to take fourth place, just out of the prizes. The only other team to reach a century of points were Phil Munson, Marc Bradley, Andy Harding and Angus McKay.
There were four twos recorded and each is valued at £26. There were two on the 6th hole from Steve Holt and Tim Seaton, one on the 9th hole from Chris Fields and the last one, was on the 13th hole from Andy Harding.
Midweek Am Am
Thursday 21st April 2022
It remained fine and dry for the first midweek competition of the season when the members played a 4-ball stableford, Waltz Am-Am on Thursday 21st April 2022. It was once again, wall to wall sunshine, although the breeze coming from the east off the North Sea was quite chilly and kept the temperatures down. The format was slightly different to the usual conditions with members playing off 85% of their individual course playing handicap, it was then the best score on the first hole, followed by the best two to score on the second hole and then, three out of four, to score on the third hole, which was repeated throughout the round. With the numbers somewhat depleted, probably due to clashing with the funeral service of long time Hands & Competitions committee member Steve Fenty, who will be sadly missed – RIP Steve, there were some excellent scores returned. Garry Hawkins, Gary Paterson, Matthew Conley and Glen Paterson finished in first place with 78 points and they win a £15 voucher each. In second place, one point further back with 77 points, after a count back, with a back nine of 37 points, was John Ritchie, Steve Jones, Bailey and John Mawer. They all win a £10 voucher after narrowly beating
Phil Munson, Marc Bradley, Paul Robison and Paul Dennis, who also returned a score of 77 points, but with a back nine of 35 points, means they just miss out on the prizes.
The only two off the day was recorded on the 9th hole by Matthew Conley and he wins a £41 voucher.
Mixed Social Stableford
Sunday 17th April 2022
Gents Medal
Saturday 16th April 2022
Producing some excellent early season form, and returning the best round of the day, in division three was Micky Paterson when he returned a score of nett 65, winning a £40 voucher. The count back procedure had to be implemented to resolve the minor places in this division with Paul Dennis, Ian (John) Ritchie and George Coates all returning scores of nett 69. Paul Dennis with a back nine of 33 was placed second and wins a £20 voucher. John Ritchie returned a back nine of 36 and took third place winning a £15 voucher edging George Coates out of the prizes.
In division two Gary Patterson won the division, with an excellent round, returning a nett 66, and winning a £40 voucher. With a nasty eight on the eleventh hole his round could have been much better. He finished one shot ahead of Tim Dixon who returned a score of nett 67 and wins a £20 voucher. Tim’s round could also have been much better with a double bogey on the last hole. Third place went down to a count back with Paul Doughty and Selwyn Shelton both returning scores of nett 71 but with a better back nine, Paul edged out his opponent and wins a £15 voucher. In division one Colin Welsh took the honour with a sub-par round of 68 winning a £40 voucher. Ian Smith was one shot further back, with a nett 69, and finished in second place and wins a £20 voucher. Matthew Shaul finished in third place, with a nett 70 and wins a £15 voucher. In division four Darren Braithwaite returned an under-par score of 69 to finish in first place, winning a £40 voucher. His round could also have been much better with a gross eight on the last hole. Ashley Rendall was one shot further back with a par 70, to take second place, winning a £20 voucher. Michael Pousette finished in third spot with a nett 72, which once again could have been much better with a couple of eights on his scorecard and he wins a £15 voucher.
There were eight twos, each valued at £14, recorded on the day with seven of them coming on the 2nd hole from Mick McNally, George Coates, Neil Ellis, Tim Dixon, Richard Hodgson, Robert Dobbs and Keith Goodwin. The other two was scored on the 6th hole by Steve Holt.
Bloomer Cup
Saturday 9th April 2022
The winners with a score of 40 points, both playing off course handicaps of 12 were AndyHarding and Michael Pogson. There scorecard represents some excellent scoring but it could have been even better with five one pointers on their card. This however was balanced by a couple of four pointers on the 8th and 14th holes when they received a shot and recorded birdies. In second place, with 37 points were a green committee pairing of Paul Doughty and Allan Playford. They could have easily won the competition with three blobs on their scorecard on the 3rd, 8th and 18th holes, which includes, arguably a couple of the easiest holes (if there is such a thing) on the card. Two past Captains of the Club, Ian Coutts and Gary Hawkins took third place with 36 points. Once again, they returned a very steady scorecard which could have been better with five, one pointers, they started with three one pointers on the trot, and only had 16 points at the turn but recovered quite well with a good back nine.
£102 was shared by the runners up Paul Doughty and Allan Playford who recorded the only two of the day on the 13th hole. I have received differing stories from both members about how the hole was played and who did what, on the hole, but I am putting it down to a very valiant joint effort – well played indeed.
The top sixteen pairings qualify for the season long Hemingway Knockout. The draw has been completed and posted in the clubhouse.
Ladies Navy Cup Foursomes
Tuesday 5th April 2022
The ladies played their Navy Cup Foursomes on Tuesday 5th April 2022 and the winners after a count-back were Jane Patterson & Sheila Dunk with 32 pts. Finishing in second place with the same number of points were Ladies Captain Issy Goulsbra & Lisa Cottingham with 32 points.
Hilda Webb won the separate 9-hole completion beating Sue Collis on the count back with Pam lee taking third spot.
Power-Play Disco Trophy Pairs
Saturday 2nd April 2022
It was a chilly start to the day, after a slight overnight frost, for the start of the first Honours Board competitions of the season, the Power Play Pairs stableford Disco Cup. The competition attracted almost 100 members and it remained fairly cold all day with the temperature failing to reach double digits, even though the sun did make an occasional appearance. The first four pairings all started relatively early in the morning and posted some excellent scores which were not beaten by the later competitors, who arguably had the better conditions. With 45 stableford points, Green-keeper Tommy Leonard and partner Darren Cook took the honour, with both players contributing equally to the scoring. They both win a £40m voucher. Second place, one point further back, with 44 points and winning a £30 voucher each, were Tom Willson and Steve McIntyre. Third place went to Shane Portess and Mike Foley who returned a score of 43 points, and they both win a £25 voucher. With 42 points, fourth place went to Mike Watson and Paul Coultas and they win a voucher each valued at £20. There was an abundance of two’s, eleven in total, each being valued at £9. There were none recorded on the second hole, with two being successful on the 6th hole from Matthew Shaul and Keith Blenkhorn. There were also a couple of the long 9th hole from Marc Bradley and Dave Wood. The other seven were obtained on the 13th hole from Spenny Wressell, Tony Lightfoot, Garry Hawkins, Mike Foley, Dave Ferguson, Jim Hughes and Marc Braithwiate.
Whilst checking the cards it was apparent a number of members forget to enter the details of the competition on the scorecard together with date, time etc. A couple of parings even suggested they were playing an Am-Am format. A separate message has been forwarded to those members not making out their score card correctly. The accurate completion of a score card is fundamental to all the principles of competitive golf and the smooth running of the competition. It only takes a few seconds to complete properly.
Gents Spring AM-AM
Saturday 26th March 2022
It was a lovely day in March for our first gents' competition of the year, the 4ball Spring Am-Am. The sun was shining and temperatures were high for the time of year. The rules were the best two stableford scores to count on each hole, playing 85% of your course handicap.
It was a well attended event, with 25 teams competing. The winners, with 90 points, are Lee Bartlett, Scott Bartlett, David Tucker & Andrew Bartlett. They each win a £20 voucher to be used in either the Pro Shop or at the bar. The next 4 teams were all tied with 89 points, falling just 1 point shy of the winners. They are Alan Drewery, Glenn McLachlan, Steve Baker & Nick Cutsforth; Neil Avison, Shane Portess, Mike Foley & Trevor Chappell; Steve Parker, Tom Wilson, John Tyson & Neil Ellis, and a special mention to the 3 man team of Andrew Harding, Paul Dennis and Angus Mackay.
Each member of those teams will receive a £10 voucher. There were 6 twos on the day. Andrew Harding was successful on the 6th hole, while Tom Wilson, Angus Mackay, Shane Holt, Scott Bartlett and Andrew Bartlett all got theirs on the 13th hole. Each two is valued at £16.
Seniors Spring Jaunt
Wednesday 23rd March 2022
Playing the back nine of the course the winner was Raj Kumar with 21 points. Second place went to Barrington Godfrey, also playing the back nine, with a score of 19 points. In third place, also with 19 points, playing the front nine was Dave Midgley.
All the competitors and members past and present enjoyed a convivial meal before the presentation in the Clubhouse. It was a thoroughly enjoyable occasion and although some of the golf was indifferent, the weather was stunning and it was a joy to be on the golf course.

Winter League Final
Saturday 19th March 2022
Marc and Paul were just not good enough, with the winners being on their game, on the day. Without making excuses Paul has only recently returned from the North Sea rigs, after an extended stay, due to a covid outbreak, which it appears may have had an impact on the result. Marc and Paul were also very complimentary to their substitute, Andy Harden who stood in whilst Paul was away and it appears he was very instrumental in two games and the pairing reaching the final. Paul and Marc agreed that the runners up prize money of £120 would be shared three ways with them all receiving £40 each. The winners have both been allocated vouchers to the value of £100.
The semi-finalists defeated teams, Allan Playford/Jamie Kinnaird and Darren Cook/Keith Tuke have also been awarded with vouchers to the value of £20 each. Although we were blessed with good weather during the winter months, there has been some positive feedback from the participants and all things being equal the competition may become an annual event once again. The competition was last played in 2008 and we are very grateful to Tim Dixon who won it, in that year, with Mark Genney. Tim has kindly donated the trophy back to the Club.
