The Annual Mixed Open Golf Competition playing for the Edgar Lee Trophy took place on Sunday 12th June 2011 at Grimsby Golf Club. The entrants were attracted from all parts of Lincolnshire, East Riding and South Yorkshire and started from both tees at 12.30pm.
The winners from Scunthorpe Golf Club Ashby Decoy (photograph) were husband and wife team Penny & Gordon Cairns (jun) being presented with the trophies by Club Captain Mick McNally.
The foursomes medal competition playing off half the combined handicap was won with a net 67 which was an extremely good score given the weather conditions. All the courses in the area are desperate for rain and after approximately three months of near drought conditions the heavens decided to open that afternoon and it never stopped until all the competitors were back into the Clubhouse. Although the rain was welcome it did make playing golf particularly difficult and there were a number of horror stories as the competitors finished.
In second place with a net 69.5 was Grimsby members Terry & Janet Smith. Mrs & Mr Smith now go onto to represent Grimsby Golf Club in the annual Lincolnshire mixed foursomes to be played later in the year.
The best gross score of the day with an excellent score of 79 were Katrina Lee and Tony Cobb from Owston Hall, (Doncaster) Golf Club.
All the competitors played glowing tributes about the course with the greens being particularly true and fast given the conditions. All vowed to return next year.
